Why Michigan decks fail early
Untreated wood absorbs water all fall, then that water freezes and expands inside the board. Two or three cycles of that and you get checking, cupping, and split stair treads. Sealing doesn't make a deck waterproof — it slows absorption enough that the freeze has less to work with.
